Boost the Curb Appeal of Your Home

Exterior Curb Appeal of House

If you’re thinking of selling your home, there are a few things you should do before placing a FOR SALE sign on your lawn. For instance, we've talked at length about staging your home on our blog (you can find them here and here) and why it’s so important. But before you start rearranging your furniture, you need to get people in the door. You want to make sure your home's first impression is a good one. Whether they see pictures posted on an MLS REALTOR® website, or upon their first drive by, your home needs strong curb appeal.

Clean Up Your Yard

Probably the most important, and easiest, way to boost the curb appeal of your home is to make sure your yard is clean. There’s no need to go for broke and landscape your yard perfectly, but do make sure the lawn is cut nicely and remove any dead trees or flowers.

Putting some potted plants or trees beside your door or making sure your garden is blooming adds a lovely touch, as well.

Fix What Needs To Be Fixed

If you can see peeling paint and sagging gutters, especially from the street, spend a little time touching up and re-hanging. These are very simple solutions that will go a long way.

Make sure the exterior of your home as well as your fence isn't dirty. If winters are tough where you are, rent a power washer or hire a professional to give your home a wash and take the grime off. You’ll be surprised how much this helps. And don't forget about your windows. Make sure they're all sparkling while you're at it.

Do Up Your Driveway

While you've got the power washer out, make sure you give your driveway and other walkways a good wash. Oil and other stains can be quite unappealing.

Fix any cracks and remove any moss or grass growing which not only looks unsightly but can be a tripping hazard as well.

Door Décor

Your front door, or any door you can see from the street, is a calling card for your home. Paint it a vibrant, inviting colour and make sure it's in good shape.

Hang a wreath or welcome sign on the door for an extra special “homey” touch.

Repair Your Roof

One of the first things a potential homebuyer will look at is the roof. If it's necessary to replace, it can be costly but could actually get you a better price for your home. This is something you can discuss with your MLS REALTOR® to see if it’s worth it for you.

At the very least, get the roof looking in good shape. Repair or replace any obvious loose shingles and clean off moss or dirt.
