It was popular to use asbestos in materials for construction up until the 1980’s. It was considered a good choice of material back in the day because of its resistance to fire and its high fibre strength. It was used as insulation against noise and heat and was also added to plaster and cement to give it more strength. This is why it can be found in everything from floor tiles to textured ceilings to insulation to stucco. The main point to know is that undisturbed asbestos-containing materials that are in good condition do not present a significant risk. These materials can often be safely managed in place. When looking at homes you should be aware of its presence, but not afraid of it. Knowledge is power, so if there is a material that you are concerned about, you should have it tested to determine if it does contain any asbestos. If it does, there are asbestos remediation companies in town that can advise you on how to deal with the asbestos, whether to manage it in place or have it removed from your home.
