6 Top Spring Home Maintenance Tips to Do Yourself

Posted by on

Since most of us are home a lot more now than we usually are due to COVID-19 now is the time to start on those home maintenance projects you’ve been putting off! If you’re not sure where to start, here are some projects you can do yourself:

1. Clear Out All Your Clutter

Now that you’re at home more you’re probably realizing you have a lot of “stuff” sitting around. Take this opportunity to pack it up and get it out of your house. Although most places which usually take donations are currently closed we’ve heard there are a few places which may be open sporadically to take much-needed donations. Contact your favourite places to donate to see what they say, or ask around to your community to see if they know anyone who’s currently taking donations.

2. Change Up a Room (Or Two!)

If you’ve been thinking about painting your bedroom or kitchen, there’s no better time to do that than now. Rearrange your furniture, and find some fun new décor online or at a local store to freshen up your home for spring.

3. Organize Your Kitchen & Pantry

You’ve likely been cooking more at home lately so chances are you now know exactly what small appliances you use often and which ones simply take up valuable room. Get rid of those ones only collecting dust, and give the ones you actually use a place of honour on your counter.

And don’t forget to do an inventory of your food as well. You probably have stuff in your pantry you’ve forgotten about. Rotate your food so your oldest food gets eaten first and doesn’t expire, and take note of what you’ve got so you don’t continue to buy the same things on your next grocery trip.

4. Tackle the Outside of Your Home

COVID-19 may be keeping us home, but since the beautiful spring weather is beckoning us outside you should take full advantage of your outdoor space! Maybe you have a gardener or landscaper but they’re not working right now. So, go ahead and clean off your deck, and sand and repaint it if necessary, tackle those gutters, power wash your driveway, mow your lawn, and rehang any loose fence boards yourself. Then grab a cold drink and kick back and relax in your spruced-up yard.

5. Tend to Your Garden

Maybe you already have a garden, so it’s the perfect time to get in there and weed it out before you plant your new spring flowers and veggies. But if you don’t already have one started, why not? You don’t have to turn your entire backyard into a garden (although, you totally could!), simply putting a planter on your deck to grow some of your favourite herbs or a few pots outside your door with your favourite spring bulbs planted, are more than enough.

6. Keep Safety in Mind

You should be checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every spring and fall so do it NOW if you haven’t already. Make sure they all have fresh batteries and are in good working order. Also, if you don’t have at least one working fire extinguisher in your home you can pick one up at certain retailers or online.

And although we all have mostly COVID-19 on our minds now, it’s important to remember that we also face other potential dangers living on Vancouver Island. So, make sure your emergency kit is up to date and you have everything you need — just in case.

We hope you’re staying safe at home with your immediate family. And we’d love to give extra special kudos to all the essential workers out there!
